Julia Jacklin Announces Album Release and World Tour

Julia Jacklin has delivered a foray of news overnight revealing her new album Crushing will drop 22 February featuring the brand new single ‘Head Alone’ alongside the news of her biggest tour to date in March 2019!

Julia’s stunning new offering Head Alone, is the second single from her forthcoming sophomore album. ‘Head Alone’, a pointed and electrifying anthem of refusal, follows the devastating first single ‘Body’. While upbeat in rhythm, ‘Head Alone’ maintains the pointed, complex lyricism Julia has become synonymous for.

“‘Head Alone’ is not a song that comes from a singular experience. It came from two years of feeling like the space around me shrinking to the point where I couldn't even raise my arms. This song is me raising my arms and running into an open field. A bit of a plea to those around me to give me space and a song to remind myself that it's okay to enforce boundaries, the good people in your life will listen, adapt and still love you.” - Julia Jacklin

With ‘Head Alone’ and ‘Body’ marking the poignant return of Julia Jacklin, Liberation Records are thrilled to reveal Julia’s hugely anticipated second album titled Crushing will be released on Friday 22 February 2019 - Polyvinyl for the US and Transgressive for the UK/ Europe.

Along with the single and album news, Frontier Touring are pleased to announce Julia will take her sophomore album on the road following its release. The Crushing Tour set for March 2019, will see the Blue Mountains artist hit metro and regional centres along the east coast including Wollongong, Canberra, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Newcastle, playing some of her biggest rooms in Australia to date. Julia’s last Australian tour was a sell out including two Corner Hotels in Melbourne and Metro Theatre in Sydney. Following the Australian leg, Julia will head overseas for a massive run of shows across the UK, Europe, the US and Canada.

“The band and I worked really hard on this album, really got to know each other as friends and musicians and it's going to be super great to recreate it on stage. They're pretty personal songs but I feel like the audiences I've built up over the last couple of years are respectful and open. It's going to be a nice environment to play them first,” Julia says of the tour.

Melbourne artist Olympia will join Julia across all dates on the Crushing Tour. Following on from her critically-acclaimed album Self Talk (released via EMI in 2016), Olympia has recently released ‘Star City’, the first single from her forthcoming sophomore release. Fresh off the back of her own headline tour last month, and with an an ARIA Award nomination and shortlist for the Australian Music Prize to her name, Olympia is proving to be a creative force to be reckoned with. Julia will also be joined by rising Sydney indie artist Annie Hamilton at the Sydney, Wollongong, Canberra and Newcastle shows, singer/songwriter Robert Muinos at the Melbourne show and Asha Jefferies in Brisbane.

Across 10 incredible tracks, Crushing embodies every possible meaning of its title word. It’s an album formed from sheer intensity of feeling, an in-the-moment narrative of heartbreak and infatuation. Whilst a moving and complex listen, Crushing unfolds with an ease that echoes Jacklin’s newfound self-reliance as an artist. With Julia’s storytelling centered on bodies, crossed boundaries and smothering closeness, Crushing reveals how our physical experience of the world shapes and sometimes distorts our inner lives.

“I really like this album, I worked hard on it and I really like listening to it. That's not usually how I feel after making something. I've finally come to accept that right now for me, making records is about capturing a time; who I am at that time, what I need to say in the best way I can say it, with minimal studio frills to cover it up. So I'm really happy to announce this one and ready for whatever things get thrown my way because of it,”  Julia explains of the album.

Produced by Burke Reid (Courtney Barnett, Liam Finn) and recorded at The Grove Studios, Crushing sets Jacklin’s understated defiance against a raw yet luminous sonic backdrop. “In all the songs, you can hear every sound from every instrument; you can hear my throat and hear me breathing,” she says. “It was really important to me that you can hear everything for the whole record, without any studio tricks getting in the way.”

Crushing follows Julia’s most recent release, the Eastwick/Cold Caller double A-side (released 17 September 2017), and her critically acclaimed debut album, Don’t Let The Kids Win (released 7 October 2016) featuring ‘Pool Party’, ‘Leadlight’ and ‘Coming of Age’,. The album went on to achieve stunning critical acclaim across the globe saw the artist tour the world non-stop following its release. Jacklin was awarded ‘Next Big Thing’ at the FBi SMAC Awards, Best Independent Blues and Roots album at the AIR Awards and was nominated for two ARIA Awards and Album of the Year at the J Awards in 2017.

Having just finalised a huge run of US tour dates across September and October supporting First Aid Kit, Julia returned to home soil for a quick break before heading to the UK this month for sold out headline dates across London, Manchester and Glasgow.

Crushing is a masterpiece and Julia Jacklin’s live shows are simply captivating. We look forward to welcoming both early in 2019.

“Body is brooding and dark in a way that invites non-musical comparisons: the slow dance of a couple in a poorly lit speakeasy, a secret kept hidden for generations, films that flicker and leave questions unanswered, a young romance that isn’t good for either party.” - The Guardian

Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever Announce a Massive World Tour

Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever Announce a Massive World Tour

RBCF_General Use 1 - Credit Warwick Baker.jpg

Just days away from the release of their highly-anticipated debut album Hope Downs – out Friday June 15 via Ivy League Records – Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever today announce their biggest headline tour to date. The huge Hope Downs World Tour will see the Melbourne outfit traverse the globe across four months playing to fans in Australia, the USA, Canada, the UK and Europe and will include sets at Lowlands (Netherlands),  Pukklepop (Belgium) and Green Man (UK), with more to be announced.

In celebration of the news, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever have dropped a surprise cut from their album in the form of closing track, ‘The Hammer’ to follow the already stellar tracks ‘Mainland’, ‘Talking Straight’ and ‘An Air Conditioned Man’ we’ve so far been treated to.

The band will kick off the Australian leg of their world tour at Brisbane Festival on Thursday Sept 27, before playing to fans in Sydney, Wollongong, Perth, Adelaide and Geelong, finishing in their hometown of Melbourne on Saturday Oct 13 at the Corner Hotel. The tour will be the first Australian shows since their sold-out ‘Mainland’ Tour in April. Tickets for the Australia shows go on sale at 10.00am this Friday June 8 – with sell out shows across their last tour, fans should act quickly to avoid disappointment.

It’s been an incredibly busy few months for Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever. Between taking out the coveted Levi’s Music Prize and being announced on this year’s Splendour in the Grass, the five-piece have filled their time touring across North America, the UK and Europe playing sold out headline shows and performances at some of the world’s biggest music festivals including Coachella, The Great Escape, Primavera,  Shaky Knees and more.

Current single 'Talking Straight’ marks the second release of new music from the band for 2018 and is currently on rotation across the likes of triple j, Double J, FBi and BBC 6 Music as well as spins across BBC Radio 1, Triple R, 4ZZZ and more. Previous single ‘Mainland’ saw the band receive accolades from the likes of Pitchfork, Stereogum and DIY Mag as well as high rotation from triple j and community radio alike.

The debut album Hope Downs was largely written over the past year in the band's Melbourne rehearsal room where their previous releases were also written and recorded. The band's core trio of songwriters – Fran Keaney, Joe White and Tom Russo – bunkered down and wrote as the chaos of the world outside unavoidably seeped into the songwriting process. “We felt like we were in a moment where the sands were shifting and the world was getting a lot weirder. There was a general sense that things were coming apart at the seams and people around us were too,” Russo explains. “The songs on this album are like a collection of postcards about wider things that were going on, seen through the lens of these small characters.”

The album title, taken from the name of a vast open cut mine in the middle of Australia, refers to the feeling of “standing at the edge of the void of the big unknown, and finding something to hold on to.” Hope Downs possesses a robust full-band sound that's all the more impressive considering the band's studio avoidance tendencies. Fans of Talk Tight and The French Press, certainly won't be disappointed here.

Body Type Sign to Inertia Music & Partisan Records

Body Type Sign to Inertia Music & Partisan Records

Body Type are extremely proud to announce their signing to Inertia Music and Partisan Records

Partisan founder Tim Putnam and managing director Zena White say of the signing, "We're so excited to be working with Body Type and we can't wait to bring their music to fans worldwide. We're equally thrilled to be partnering with our Australian cousins Inertia Label Group for the first time globally."

Gab Ryan and Meg Williamsco-directors of Inertia Label Group add, “From Body Type's first ever gig we've seen the band go from strength to strength and are extremely thrilled to be working with them, this is a band that dreams are made of. We are just as excited to be working in tandem world wide with our partners Partisan Records, who are in our humble opinion, one of the great indie record labels of our time.

Lead vocalist and guitarist Sophie McComish shares, ”The people Body Type work with are like our family, and we are so happy for Inertia and Partisan to become a part of that. Gab (Inertia Music co-director) came to our last rehearsal before our very first gig for moral support, and Meg (Inertia Music co-director) still has a setlist from our second ever show so they have been with us from the start really. Partisan is an incredibly progressive label that has built some world-class artists from the ground up and Inertia looks after a stack of our favourite bands ever, so we are very excited to all join forces.

To celebrate, Body Type today also share their new single and accompanying video for ‘Arrow' which premiered on Noisey overnight and announce a special one-off show at Waywards in Sydney tonight. Returning with their take on scuzz rock, ‘Arrow’ (recorded and mixed by Antonia Gauci and mastered by Jess Cooper) immerses the listener with dreamy distorted guitars, infectious basslines and angsty vocal lines to deliver their self-described “pop-rock tantrum.”

Vocalist and bassist, Georgia Wilkinson-Derums says of the track, “Arrow is about the prick of love. It’s about being stung and the pleasure and pain that accompany being struck by cupids arrow. For me the song has always carried the power of female physicality in performance, it’s where I see Body Type get a little more aggressive, a little more dramatic. Wherever it begins and ends we hope it gets the heart pumping and blood running. Keep it loud. BODY TYPE."

Filmed in Sydney and directed by Madeleine Purdy, the video begins with two ballerinas with bows and arrows in tension between them, paying homage to the performance work, Rest Energy (1980) by Marina Abramović & Ulay. Reminiscent of cinematic dreamscapes, the four girls playfully appear, fading in and out of a sunset-coloured clouds floating above a sea of confused onlookers. Taking the role of cupid, Georgia, Annabel, Cecil and Sophie aim arrows at their spectators and play authors to their own fate, in a clever subversion of power dynamics in representations of love and romance.

Fans of Body Type can also catch them on the road in support of Alex Cameron with Roy on Horn across their national headline tour this month. The tour will be stopping off in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth at The Foundry, Manning Bar, Croxton Bandroom and Amplifier. Tickets are on sale now, see all details below.

City Calm Down Release New Single & Announce Tour

‘Blood’ is the new single from Melbourne’s City Calm Down. The first taste of the band’s highly anticipated second album, ‘Blood’ was premiered on triple j’s Good Nights with Linda Marigliano and is out now.

Listen to ‘Blood’ here

In celebration of their new single, City Calm Down will be performing new material in six capital cities in Aug/Sept – their first headline dates in almost a year. This will be the only chance to catch headline shows before the band’s next record – tickets go on sale 10am (AEST), Friday 16 June via www.citycalmdown.com.

Inspired by a standoff with a former employer, ‘Blood’ is all formidable, joyful crescendos – the push and pull of a day job versus touring commitments.

“I ended up quitting my job,” singer Jack Burke explains. “My boss was being inflexible but I was also being self absorbed, and the lyrics reflect that. They touch on the grind of work and how easy it is to isolate yourself from the people who matter to you by being too caught up in your own ambition and what you’re doing.

“This is a place I feel we ended up towards the end of recording the album,” he continues. “We were running late-night recording sessions during the middle of the week when we all had work the following morning, and we were all just emotionally exhausted by the end. Not to let an opportunity go to waste, we really tried to capture that sense of madness in the final chorus.”

For album #2 the band are reteaming with producer Malcolm Beasley (who helmed their debut). The meticulous In A Restless House spawned singles ‘Son’, ‘Rabbit Run’, ‘Wandering’, ‘Your Fix’ and ‘Border On Control’, earning over 3 million streams on Spotify and scoring high rotation across triple j (inc. a Feature Album), Beats 1, FBi, Triple R, 4ZZZ and more. Accolades from internationals such as NME, Stereogum, Consequence of Sound, Indie Shuffle and more; sell out national tour; sets at Falls, Splendour, Sugar Mountain, The Big Pineapple and other festivals. Now, after months of solid work, it’s time for City Calm Down to reveal their next step.

“The new record feels like a natural progression from In A Restless House,” explains Burke. “There are songs that expand on the themes and songwriting present on that record, and there are songs that mark a clear departure. It also feels much more cohesive… which is probably due to us having a clearer idea of how we wanted the songs to sound before we went into the studio.”

Joining City Calm Down at all shows is hardworking Melbourne soul ensemble The Cactus Channel, whose recent EP Do It For Nothing, with Ball Bark Music’s Sam Cromack, is available via Bandcamp. It’s the latest collaboration for the band, who also worked with Nick Murphy aka Chet Faker on track ‘Kill The Doubt’.

Don’t miss these shows! There’s plenty more to come from City Calm Down…

Husky Announce Album Tour & Release New Video

Husky Announce Album Tour & Release New Video

With the release of their new album Punchbuzz little over a month away, Husky today bring news of a national tour to fans and share the visionary video for their current single ’Ghost’.

Following on from popular first single ‘Late Night Store’, ‘Ghost’ has enjoyed a warm welcome into the world. It was premiered via triple j’s Veronica and Lewis along with Clash Music in the UK, and has since received airplay at triple j and double j, amongst a host of additions to Apple Music and Spotify playlists. The rhythmic, driving song sets the scene for Husky’s third album Punchbuzz, out June 2.

The impressive, cleverly animated video was produced by Melbourne production house Dropbear, and sees Husky and Gideon entering a dreamlike and surreal Day of the Dead inspired realm. Director Jonathan Chong was inspired by the song’s evocative lyrics.

The idea came from my interpretation of the song. I wanted to do something relating to ghosts and spirits and thought that a Day of the Dead theme would tie in nicely. The icons and imagery associated with the Day of the Dead festival are really colourful and bold, which gives the animation the vibrancy I was aiming for, whilst also having some dark undertones. It’s a celebration of the departed in a way that is joyous, rather than a morbid celebration. The clip is animated as though each frame has been made from cross-stitch or a Mexican textile. – Jonathan Chong, Dropbear

Shaped by the duo’s recent experiences, Punchbuzz sees the band swapping their signature folk sound for streamlined indie rock that lopes ahead with widescreen atmosphere, dark lyrics, and newly muscled melodies. Sharp, lean, and driving, the album more than lives up to the dynamic imperative of its title.

The Punchbuzz tour will see Husky perform in full band mode, taking the album’s multi-layered sounds to audiences in metro and regional locations nation-wide. The band’s smaller, east-coast run of shows at the tail end of 2017 all sold-out. Supporting Husky on the run will be Mackay based singer/ songwriter and triple J Unearthed alumni Tia Gostelow, and up-and-coming Sydney based band Hot Spoke. Tickets are on-sale now.

Punchbuzz is out June 2 and available for pre-order via www.huskysongs.com.  It will be released via Embassy of Music (Bjork, Robyn, Asgeir) in the UK and Europe and through fellow indie Nevado Music in the US.

Sarah Blasko Announces 'The Soloist' National Tour

Sarah Blasko Announces 'The Soloist' National Tour

Sarah Blasko will tour around the country this May to July, today unveiling ‘The Soloist’ national tour.  Performing without a band for the first time in her storied career, Sarah will lay bare her extraordinary songwriting and iconic voice in a special nation-wide tour of theatres both intimate and grand, from Darwin to Thirroul, Perth to Meeniyan, Cairns to Hobart, and more.

It’s the first time since 2013 that Sarah has toured so extensively, and the prospect of taking to the stage solo and stripped back, is something that she relishes.

Sarah says of the tour: “It feels like the right time to challenge myself, take the leap & finally do some headline shows on my own. I’ve slowly been gathering the courage after enjoying a few solo support spots overseas a few years ago. I’m hoping to reimagine material from all of my albums & premiere some new songs as well. I want this to be a really unique & transformative experience for both myself & the audience”.

Sarah Blasko writes songs that strike with rare immediacy, clarity and purpose. Melodies beguilingly simple, lyrics ever honest and direct. She has a deserved reputation as one of Australia's most commanding live performers whether she's playing in the most intimate theatres, the grandest Opera Houses or our most expansive festival stages.

From her game-changing debut The Overture & The Underscore (2004) through to 2015's stunning synth-laden paean to love Eternal Return, the multi-platinum selling, three-time ARIA Award winner has continually proven herself an irrepressible artistic force and one of the most compelling live performers in Australian music.
